Mission
The objective of NPHC is to:
- To serve as the governing body for all nationally recognized and chartered Black Greek Letter Organization chapters approved for membership and activity by the National Pan-Hellenic Council as well as the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
- To nurture the free exchange of information, experiences, and accomplishments and foster cooperation between the member organizations.
- To encourage and maintain a high level of scholarship and service for the member organizations.
- To educate the University of Wisconsin–Madison student population about NPHC and its member organizations.
- To maintain high inter-Greek relationships.
- To assist the University in the attainment of its educational, cultural and judicial objectives.
Programs
History
In 1906 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. became the first fraternity for African American men, at Cornell University. Then in 1908 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was formed at Howard University, becoming the first sorority for African American women. In 1930, the National Pan-Hellenic Conference was founded, consisting of 9 fraternities and sororities. For over 75 years, NPHC has been at UW-Madison, starting with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and then Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in 1946. Currently, there are 8 out of the 9 fraternities and sororities here at UW-Madison. In 2022 the Divine Nine Garden Plaza was revealed.
