Programs and Services

Our office not only seeks to elevate the experience of fraternity and sorority members, but to also provide opportunities to enhance their personal and professional development. Below you will find information regarding the programs and services provided by the Fraternity & Sorority Life staff.

Council Advising

Four governing councils serve as a voice and provide support to their corresponding chapters. These leaders are tasked with making difficult decisions, finding solutions, and pushing the fraternity and sorority community to new heights. Our staff supports the councils by providing cross-council group advising, based on function, for predominately external roles, and one-on-one advising for predominantly internal-facing roles. This structure is to help foster a culture of innovation and collaboration, while still providing support for each council’s unique needs.

During council officer transitions, the Fraternity and Sorority Life team plans and coordinates retreats that focus on education: policies, procedures and best practices, as well as, goal setting and overall leadership development.

Chapter Coaching

To support our chapters directly, our staff is available to meet with chapter leadership or any members of the community to provide advice and guidance. We expect to meet with each chapter president at least once per semester to check-in on chapter operations, challenges, and successes.  Chapter leadership are encouraged to seek out additional meetings to address specific problems or advice on a range of topics, including, but not limited to:

  • Member Education
  • Risk Management
  • Fundraising
  • Service
  • Leadership
  • Accountability
  • Chapter Operations
  • Recruitment

Leadership Programs

Through leadership programs, students actively engage through educational and developmental offerings, to continue to edit the vision for fraternities and sororities at UW-Madison, and to build strong relationships among the chapter presidents and Fraternity and Sorority Life staff through authentic conversations. Topics discussed include, but are not limited to:

  • Operations and Requirements
  • Leadership Development
  • Risk management & Harm Reduction
  • Responding to Crisis
  • Mental Health
  • Sexual Assault
  • Alcohol & Other Drugs
  • Hazing

Officer Workshops

To meet the needs of the other important officers that support our fraternities and sororities, we host officer workshops on a variety of topics. These workshops provide opportunities for officers from different chapters to connect with each other and learn new skills and best practices surrounding their particular area of focus. Additionally, officers are able to ask questions, get feedback, and problem solve as a group. The workshops focus on the following:

  • New Member Education
  • Service & Philanthropy
  • Public Relations & Marketing
  • Accountability
  • Scholarship
  • Recruitment & Intake
  • Member Development & Programming
